When Katherine Baker decides to ride out a tropical storm in her employer’s creepy old house, she doesn’t expect it to turn into a real life game of Clue. First to turn up, a dead body with a gunshot wound. Thank goodness for backup arriving in the form of her crush, Banks Fortenot. Exploring the house together turns up another body, killed with a wrench. Soon, every weapon from the classic board game makes an appearance in some way, as well as people turning up who have no business being out in the storm. Just what secrets are hiding in the house? Can Katherine and Banks escape both killers and the storm? Boucherie Breakdown is a fast and furious atmospheric mystery with plenty of twists and humor. While part of Pauline Baird Jones’s Big Uneasy series featuring the Baker siblings, it works well as a stand alone. Katherine is a former cop working as a security contractor after a bad experience on the job. Thinking she’s protecting a wheelchair bound, elderly man, she opts to stay behind since it’s just a tropical storm. Battling both the elements and whoever is behind the events in the house, she fears she might be going a bit crazy. The arrival of Banks gives her a partner and some grounding against the strange things going on. Like the other Baker siblings, Katherine is capable and level headed, but under the circumstances, anyone would be spooked. The burgeoning romance between her and Banks balances out the tension provided by the storm and the bad guys. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
