Bloodlines

The first book in Richelle Mead's New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive--this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood.

Blood doesn't lie...

Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the last place anyone would think to look for vampire royalty - a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning...

This is the awkward moment where I admit that I've not actually read the Vampire Academy series yet. It's really awkward. Bloodlines was available for free on iBooks as part of their first in a series offers and I jumped at the chance to download it. I hadn't really noticed it was a spin-off to the Vampire Academy books until I was a quarter way through, and then I had a major dilemma. My OCD compels me to finish any book that I start reading, yet I have bigger issues with reading books out of order. Thankfully I have seen the movie so at least I'm somewhat familiar with who Rose, Vasilisa, and Dimitri are.

I quite liked Bloodlines as a standalone novel, since that's basically what I've read it as. I'm really keen to read the rest of the books in the Bloodlines series but I'm rather inclined to read through the Vampire Academy books first. I'm intrigued to know the histories and what has happened for things to arrive as they have where Bloodlines has started.

I can say that I'm very impressed with Richelle Mead's writing style and I appreciate the mature tone with which the characters are portrayed, as opposed to similar series in the same genre like the House of Night series which I found difficult to read because I couldn't get past the stupidity of the characters enough to focus on the plot. I am really looking forward to reading more of Mead's work.

I enjoyed reading another story from the world of Vampire Academy but focused on different characters. I look forward to more books in the series.
