Blazewrath Games

Dragons and their riders compete in an international sports tournament in this alternate contemporary world fantasy

Lana Torres has always preferred dragons to people. In a few weeks, sixteen countries will compete in the Blazewrath World Cup, a tournament where dragons and their riders fight for glory in a dangerous relay. Lana longs to represent her native Puerto Rico in their first ever World Cup appearance, and when Puerto Rico’s Runner—the only player without a dragon steed—is kicked off the team, she’s given the chance.

But when she discovers that a former Blazewrath superstar has teamed up with the Sire—a legendary dragon who’s cursed into human form—the safety of the Cup is jeopardized. The pair are burning down dragon sanctuaries around the world and refuse to stop unless the Cup gets cancelled. All Lana wanted was to represent her country. Now, to do that, she’ll have to navigate an international conspiracy that’s deadlier than her beloved sport.

The dragons want to save Papi. Are you Puerto Rican?? GET THIS BOOK!! Dragon Riders, mofongo, panderetas, and crowds cheering "Boricua!" I was most impressed at the similarities between the main character's relationships with her parents and my own. I was able to relate to so many emotions at a much deeper level than others probably would. I have PLENTY of quotation tabs and fun Puerto Rico reference tabs that I can't wait to share with my siblings. I wish I had this book when I was younger, so much of Lana reminds me of me! I have to remind myself this is a young adult book and hope many of the plot holes will be explained in book 2. To me this book is more of a 4.5. It was close to DNF in the first chapter with the over abundance of adjectives for miscellaneous items. Almost every item seemed to have a description that didn't feel integral to the story. Luckily however this did not continue in the rest of the book and I was able to get sucked into the story. Next we have a young teenager with zero training who is able to figure out every scheme or solution before the government officials or trained dragon riders can... it was a stretch closer to "unbelievable". The plot is extremely unique and I can't wait to start the next book ASAP!
