Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me

An instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller!

From multi-award winner Whoopi Goldberg comes a new and unique memoir of her family and their influence on her early life.

If it weren't for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010--and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later--she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone.

Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time. Growing up in the projects in New York City, there were trips to Coney Island, the Ice Capades, and museums, and every Christmas was a magical experience. To this day, she doesn't know how her mother was able to give them such an enriching childhood, despite the struggles they faced--and it wasn't until she was well into adulthood that Whoopi learned just how traumatic some of those struggles were.

Fans of personal memoirs such as Finding Me by Viola Davis and In Pieces by Sally Field will be touched by Bits and Pieces: a moving tribute from a daughter to her mother, and a beautiful portrait of three people who loved each other deeply. Whoopi writes, "Not everybody gets to walk this earth with folks who let you be exactly who you are and who give you the confidence to become exactly who you want to be. So, I thought I'd share mine with you."

In Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, Whoopi Goldberg steps away from her public, irreverent persona to craft an intimate memoir centered on two emotional pillars: her mother, Emma Harris, and her brother, Clyde. The book does not follow a strict chronological structure; instead, it is organized as fragments—“bits and pieces”—of memories that gradually form an emotional portrait of the author. This formal choice aligns with the title and works as a narrative strategy to highlight how memory functions: selectively, emotionally, and sometimes nonlinearly. The strongest element of the book is the portrayal of her mother. Goldberg presents Emma as a decisive presence—a practical, witty, and resilient woman whose worldview shaped her personal and professional life. The author avoids excessive idealization and relies on everyday episodes, often marked by dry humor and direct observations. This balance between tenderness and clarity gives the narrative authenticity and prevents it from becoming merely sentimental tribute. Another notable aspect is the confessional yet controlled tone. Goldberg writes with simplicity and an almost conversational rhythm, which draws the reader in and reinforces the feeling of intimacy. However, this stylistic choice can also be seen as a limitation: at times, the narrative lacks deeper analytical exploration. Certain family conflicts, losses, and turning points are mentioned briefly, without more complex psychological development. As a result, the memoir feels emotionally sincere, but not always deeply layered. The book also stands out in its treatment of grief. Rather than dramatizing, Goldberg records absence and change with restraint, showing how memory becomes a tool for continuity. This understated approach gives the work a quiet emotional impact—more reflective than cathartic. Overall, Bits and Pieces is a delicate and honest memoir, sustained by the strength of family bonds and the author’s authentic voice. It is not a comprehensive autobiography nor a deeply analytical one, but it succeeds as an intimate emotional portrait. Its greatest strength lies in its sincerity and its ability to transform simple memories into reflections on belonging, identity, and loss.

Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother and Me by Whoopi Goldberg was more of an Ode to her mother than a memoir. I began knowing very little about Whoopi and afterwards, I don’t think I know much more. It felt like a monologue rather than an audiobook. I was kind of annoyed when she would begin laughing before she told a vignette, sort of like laugh tracks to convey that the story is supposed to be funny 😵‍💫I thought many pieces of her life were omitted, she seemed to make excuses for her family and at the same time presented an idyllic childhood in the projects of NYC. Meh😑
