Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard

From the magical moments on set as Draco Malfoy to the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, get a backstage pass into Tom Felton's life on and off the big screen in this #1 New York Times bestseller, now in paperback!
Tom Felton's adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school.
Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the muggle world. He tells stories from his early days in the business like his first acting gig where he was mistaken for fellow blonde child actor Macaulay Culkin and his Harry Potter audition where, in a very Draco-like move, he fudged how well he knew the books the series was based on (not at all). He reflects on his experiences working with cinematic greats such as Alan Rickman, Sir Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith, and Ralph Fiennes (including that awkward Voldemort hug). And, perhaps most poignantly, he discusses the lasting relationships he made over that decade of filming, including with Emma Watson, who started out as a pesky nine-year-old whom he mocked for not knowing what a boom mic was but who soon grew into one of his dearest friends. Then, of course, there are the highs and lows of fame and navigating life after such a momentous and life-changing experience.
Now with a new chapter for the paperback that delves into Felton's experience of fame, Beyond the Wand is an entertaining, funny, and poignant must-read for any Harry Potter fan. Prepare to meet a real-life wizard.

Readers say *Beyond the Wand* is a deeply personal, honest memoir offering an intimate look at Tom Felton’s journey from child actor to adult. Reviewe...
Throughout the story, Felton recounts his early experiences growing up in Epsom, Surrey, and how he discovered his passion for acting at a young age (and fishing -who knew?!?!?!). He delves into the audition process for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and shares the story of how he landed the role of Draco Malfoy, a character that would define much of his early career. He also writes about how people often can't separate him from the character and that has got to be hard. From what I can tell, and what I hear about actors, Tom Felton is a nice guy...so very different than his Draco counterpart (not that he didn't get up to a little mischief here and there).
The "deep dive" into his personal life explores relationships, friendships, and the importance of his family. He writes about the ups and downs of fame and the impact it had on his identity, providing a candid and honest perspective on the realities of being in the spotlight. He is raw and honest and completely open about his struggles with alcohol and how hard he hit rock bottom. Again, candid.
I laughed in this. My heart broke in this. My faith in humanity resurfaced in this. Felton's memoir delivers in so many ways. I'm not sure I would have picked up a memoir by any of the other characters (that's not true -- I absolutely would not have picked up a memoir by any of the others), but Tom Felton has always intrigued me more so than that others.
I give this one an enthusiastic FIVE stars!
And apparently, he narrates the audiobook. I don't do audiobooks, but admittedly I might have listened to this one.
I'm very happy that Tom is both hilarious and has a good memory for the details. I'm not an absolutely massive Potter fan, but this was the perfect behind the scenes look at both the film industry and an institution.
Had a blast with it!
If you're looking for a lot of Potter secrets and treats, this isn't exactly the book for you. It, instead, is about Felton's experience on the films, who he admired, and what he learned as an actor and man.
Pure magic... (see what I did there?)
