Intense emotional ride
It took me about 100 pages to get attached to the story but it’s worth hanging in. The story Ramps up quickly and really depicts not just the atrocities of war, but the complex array of values and emotions that people ARE. Love becomes a very big part of the story. I enjoyed the writing style, enough description but not too much. The Aftermath is required reading to tie up all the loose ends. The main story ended and kindle kicked me out to ratings page and I was left very disappointed by that ending. You have to go back and read further. Leyer remains a bit of a mystery but you can make your own assumptions about his associations and political dealings to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion.
