Arm of the Sphinx (The Books of Babel, 2)

"One of my favorite books of all time" -- Mark Lawrence on Senlin Ascends
The Tower of Babel is proving to be as difficult to reenter as it was to break out of. Forced into a life of piracy, Senlin and his eclectic crew are struggling to survive aboard their stolen airship as the hunt to rescue Senlin's lost wife continues.
Hopeless and desolate, they turn to a legend of the Tower, the mysterious Sphinx. But help from the Sphinx never comes cheaply, and as Senlin knows, debts aren't always what they seem in the Tower of Babel.
Time is running out, and now Senlin must choose between his friends, his freedom, and his wife.
Does anyone truly escape the Tower?

Arm of the Sphinx - Book 2 in The Books of Babel by Josiah Bancroft proved to me in the very first chapter that is one that would not suffer "Second Book Syndrome" - in fact, in many ways it was better than the first....but really though, Senlin Ascends built up to an amazing momentum and Arm of the Sphinx continued it, while cranking it up to 11.
In this installment, our band of of the lost make their escape by airship....and embark on their adventures of becoming pirates. Who doesn't love a good pirate story?? Especially one of pirates who are only pirates out of necessity and as a means to an end to reach Pelphia, the possible place where Marya might be.
One thing our crew didn't count on was how difficult it would be to get back into the Tower once they escaped. After some daring attempts to put in at various ports, a run-in with the law - our little band decide to try and meet up with the Sphinx - the supposed maker of Edith's mechanical arm.
Nothing ever comes for free and no good deed goes unpunished. This was a delightful adventure that introduced me to a few new favorite characters, gave me new insight to our characters while also sprinkling in the moments of whimsy I first fell in love with in Senlin Ascends.
Absolutely cannot wait to see what is in store in the next one!
