This was a reread for me but it's been over ten years since I last read it. I remembered that it was pretty twisty and engrossing, and it didn't disappoint in that facet. Dan Brown has written a race through Rome with thrilling turns and Catholic lore sprinkled in that keeps you on your toes with hints of medieval conspiracy.

There's not much in terms of characters and development, but it's not really supposed to focus on that. A fun read that is easy to devour, but also ultimately not very memorable.

I unwittingly borrowed the unabridged version of the audiobook from my library and 19! hours later.. I mean, the plot was good, I enjoyed much of this book but there was a lot of descriptive information that could have been left out. I never thought it was going to end. All in all though it was a good listen for background noise while working.

Meh. This is all crazy plot plot plot. The characters are all highly-educated and in professional careers yet they seem to have very simplistic views about everything, but especially about the relationship between religion and science. They have no deep personal thoughts of any kind. The nonreligious characters ask child-like questions about religion in the middle of a terrorist emergency. Even the Carmelengo character who would be highly educated in theology and highly-educated in general, and generally know better, says some really unsophisticated things.

The plot is also kind of lame. For example, the protagonists waste time investigating a murder in the middle of this terrorist emergency. They also go in the order the terrorists would prefer they go, with the terrorists always one step ahead, instead of skipping ahead to the terrorists' ultimate destination.
