A murderous android discovers itself in All Systems Red, a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial Intelligence. “As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.” In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. This is definitely one of the weirder books I’ve read. But I loved it! A bot who is basically off the rails, following a program that parallels proscribed actions only if they suit its own purposes. I really, really like Muderbot. It is kind of amoral, and yet seems to have some type of morality. I think I will have to continue this series. I kind of care about what happens to Murderbot.

Interesting story about a part robot/part human security bot. Delves into the question of what is human who has free will.

I have read so many reviews about this series, from my GR friends. While I do enjoy a really good sci-fi story, robot stories aren’t really my kind of story. However, I decided to finally check it out and, fortunately, this first installment is a pretty quick read.

The book summary pretty much lays out the whole storyline. What the book summary doesn’t say is that on his previous assignment, SecUnit, aka Murderbot, was hacked by a competitor company that infected Murderbots governor module that led to the killing of the clients. The company completely reprogrammed Murderbot. Before his new assignment, Murderbot hacked his governor module and disconnected it so that he could have control over what happens to him and never be hacked again.

Anyway, by about the 35-40% mark, I’m thinking that I was right about this story not being my kind of story and telling myself that if it doesn’t start getting better soon, it’s going to end up as a DNF. It’s not long before Murderbot and the new clients discover something hinkey going on with the other research team on the planet where they have been conducting research. Ok, it just got better.

I especially liked the finale too. Had it not ended the way it did, this series would have been a one and done for me. However, I can see now that the series is going to revolve around Murderbot traveling around to decide what he wants from life and the story will revolve around his escapes, kind of like a Murderbot Reacher. Lol🤣, yeah I’m going to at least check out the next installment.
