Alienated

Three teenagers discover an unearthly creature with incredible powers who needs prey to survive - but as they try to use his powers for good, it may be these humans who pose the greatest threat to the world.

THREE KIDS CALLED SAM.
ONE ALIEN BIOWEAPON.

Three teenagers, each an outcast in their own ways, stumble upon an unearthly entity as it’s born. As they bond over this shared secret and the incredible abilities of their new discovery, the trio soon realizes the truth: this creature is dangerous...and in need of prey.

But as each of them tries to decide how they can use this newfound power to do some real good in a broken world, they’ll find that the greatest threat to humanity may not come from the stars - but from the truth behind their seemingly good intentions.

Eisner Award-nominated writer Simon Spurrier (Sandman Universe, Coda) and acclaimed artist Chris Wildgoose (Batman: Nightwalker) present a subversive coming-of-age story about changing the world - and the lines we’ll cross to get everything we want in it.

Alienated is just one of the many 2014 titles that I have been excited to get my hands on. So yes, I was beside myself when I received a copy, even setting aside every other read that I had lined up or was currently reading. I am so glad I did. This was un put down-able and I loved it.

Although I am not the biggest fan of third person narrative, I thought it really worked out well for this book. We get both POVs of Cara and Aelyx, and I loved being inside both their heads. They have distinct voices, it was not difficult to tell them apart. I really liked Cara and was almost instantly connected to her. She went through a lot of tough situations. Her friends, boyfriend and entire town turned against her, because she agreed to the exchange. Sure, she had her moments of self-pity but overall, I thought she was strong, brave and quite funny.

Aelyx was a little bit more difficult to like. He comes off as arrogant and it really bugs me when characters have that "I am better than you" mentality. However. He did a tremendous amount of growing. Really, he was almost a completely different person, errr alien, in the end. I loved it.

As for their relationship: sure, it was predictable where it was going but it was so sweet, I didn't care. There is no insta-love; these two slowly build up a friendship that turns into a super cute and sweet romance. Their attraction was undeniable from the start and the sexual tension was off the charts! They had some awkward and funny moments together that had me crackin up! Particularly, a scene with Aelyx reciting the periodic table, her father and a backwards shirt.

Of course, there is more to this than just the romance. I liked the history and back story of the L'eihr's. It was so fascinating learning about their life, customs and where they originated. There was also this mystery to exactly WHAT Aleyx was up to. Yes, we have his POV but we were kept in the dark for SO LONG, I was going crazy! It was an interesting plot and kept me entertained.

My Peeve- It's predictability, where the romance is concerned. Also, there were a few scenarios I was a little frustrated regarding Cara and her decision-making. I just thought it was a little.. much. Aaaaaaaaand, I don't like the presence of a particular character at the end. Something doesn't sit right and I have a bad feeling about this person and his possible role in book 2.

Overall- I really loved this! Solid writing, outstanding & likeable characters, with a sweet romance to boot-- makes Alienated un-put-down-able and one of my favorites of the year! I highly recommend.
