I grew up AME (African Methodist Episcopal) and saw this book on display in the library and decided to give it a try. Dr. Evans outshines himself in this brief yet detailed book about the formation of black churches since slavery. His knowledge of scripture and naming of numerous blacks throughout the Bible, also backed by scripture, were fascinating. The book begins with Dr. Evans college life which from first glance seemed to be a dismal place for which he planned to transfer. However, God placed him there, and that school became the foundation for his ministry journey. Dr. Evans carries us with him on that road to marriage, graduate school, and eventually becoming a megachurch pastor.
