The Mermaids Club, a philanthropic organization in Axia is hosting an auction to raise money for the children’s library. With their grandparents running the event, Dee & Wendy are roped in to help. Among the items is a rare self-igniting phoenix feather, highly sought after and valuable as well as dangerous in the wrong hands. An unscrupulous and highly unethical talisman creator and influencer who would do anything to acquire it starts a campaign against Dee’s grandparents when he’s denied access to the auction. Things get worse when the feather is stolen after the auction. Can Dee track it down before her grandparents’ reputations are destroyed?
Meanwhile Dee has a few other headaches to deal with. Her new pet client is a spoiled and stubborn flying horse, Starshadow. The owner, Mr. Hornsby, an incubus, has Dee off kilter whenever they interact. And Havoc, her dragon glamoured to look like a dire wolf, has started flying. With vet Cruz out of town, Dee is at a loss of how to handle it.

The third book in Melissa Erin Jackson’s Mythical Pet Sitting series is as delightful and charming as the first two. If you’ve missed them, this one can stand on its own as well. Dee’s uncanny ability to connect with difficult creatures comes in handy with her new charge. Starshadow is sassy and silly with a number of quirks that test Dee’s patience. Dee also gets introduced to her client that will be featured in book 4, a talking, sapient weasel-like animal named Peril. There are so many laugh out loud scenes throughout the book that balance the seriousness of the mystery. Even though Cruz is away for most of the book, his and Dee’s relationship continues to deepen with them even sharing a kiss at the end. Havoc has a warning for the good doctor if he hurts Dee. Looking forward to more adventures for Dee.
