A Monster Calls: Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd

A New York Times bestseller!
Patrick Ness’s Carnegie Medal–winning masterwork is poised to attract a discerning crossover audience.
The monster in Conor’s backyard is not the one he’s been expecting — the one from the nightmare he’s had every night since his mother started her treatments. This monster is ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd — whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself — Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

Just wow!!
I don’t think I even have the words to review this book. I cried and cried and cried - It was so moving!
This book is an absolute triumph, one of the best things I have EVER read! I was hooked straight from the authors note on page one!
I literally can’t explain the story at all - just go and read it!
Favourite quotes:
- “You do not write your life with words...You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do.”
- “Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.”
- “Stories are important, the monster said. They can be more important than anything. If they carry the truth.”
- “If you speak the truth, the monster whispered in his ear, you will be able to face whatever comes.”
Fabulously creepy and surprisingly poignant.
What a remarkable story! I came across this book by chance and wow, am I ever glad I did. I was looking for something fairly short, engrossing, and spooky. This story delivers all that and so much more.
It is fantasy/fairytale meets reality; enchanting, haunting, touching, thought-provoking. Who or what is the monster? Why does he visit each time at 12:07 am? Why is he visiting Connor at all?
This book is best when you know very little about it. Therefore, I leave you with these thoughts:
1) The 4 hr audiobook narrated by Jasan Isaacs is FANTASTIC
2) The author interview at the end of the story is FANTASTIC
3) The story itself is FANTASTIC
