This book gave a lot of good historical background and setting description regarding 1830s Texas and the conflict between Mexico vs. Texas. The characters were tough and scrappy despite having dealt with many hardships, especially Lucinda and her mama. Most of the book seemed to be about life during this time period and the war was not quite as front and center as I thought it would be. In fact, the book started to get really exciting and suspenseful in the last 1/4. Overall, interesting but not quite as exciting as other books in the series.
