Well, this is quite the fall compared to my thoughts of the first book. My biggest complaint - this was 2x longer than it needed to be! It is soooo overly descriptive and repetitive.

The meat of the story is great, and I love the direction the series is going, but so much of the book was spent on Poppy’s angst and fears and insecurities and feelings. She is almost a great heroine, and yes, it’s great to address these things, but every chapter seemed to include a rehash of her inner dialogue trying to best these negative feelings.

On the plus, Kieran is a great addition and is quickly becoming a favourite. I’m looking forward to more from him and more of these quips:

”I haven’t known you for long…but sometimes, the things your mind conjures worry me.”

All in all, a drop from the first book, but I’m still looking forward to continuing the series.

The best part about this book is the SEAMLESS pick up from where [b:From Blood and Ash|52831200|From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash, #1)|Jennifer L. Armentrout|https:i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585598504l/52831200._SX50_.jpg|78982151] leaves off. Additionally, I ate up the tension between Poppy and Casteel but the longing for Hawke. I really love how JLA walked us through the internal struggle Poppy is having over accepting both sides of Casteel.

This book focuses on the relationship building between Poppy and Cas. I liked that there was not sudden attraction but the building of attraction with time and acceptance of Cas and Hawke.

Now, I finished this on a day where I was already emotionally fried but it almost made me cry. The ending had me jumping immediately into [b:The Crown of Gilded Bones|55240343|The Crown of Gilded Bones (Blood and Ash, #3)|Jennifer L. The continuation of this story was so good! I get strong ToG vibes and it is scratching the SJM itch very well! Can't wait to read book 3!
