A Child Called It: One Child's Courage to Survive

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

Picked this book up at my doctor's office. Not quite sure how to rate a book full of stories of downright sadistic abuse. I like it? I hate the thought this type of abuse exists in this world.

I cannot remember how this book came on my to-read list...so that's my disclaimer.
It seems harsh to give just one star to the memoirs of an abused child, but reading this book made me feel like a voyeur. I did not understand the way the book was structured, nor its purpose. I was left with so many questions I felt answers should have been provided for, in order to make this book useful. What happened to his parents? Where did his father go? Why did his mother take it out on him only? And why did she chose to abuse him that way? The POW references were odd... How are his brothers dealing with this? I felt a lot was missing from this account.

This is a painful book about child abuse but it is so important that it exists.
