Community Reviews
this book is so warm and comfy with an underlying heartbreak that comes with the death of good friends
This one-hour read was really so enjoyable.
In 1949, writer Helene Hanff sees an ad for a London bookstore in the Saturday Review of Literature. The books she has been looking for in New York are either rare, expensive editions or "grimy marked-up schoolboy copies," so she inquires of this Marks & Co, at 84, Charing Cross Road, London, as to their availability.
Reading the 20-year correspondence that follows felt almost like eavesdropping. Helene develops a corresponding relationship with most everyone at Marks & Co., even some of the employees' family members. The 20-year relationship covers the years after the war, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Beatles, and other momentous events in history.
