About Literary Appetites
Literary Appetites is a food-focused book club for readers hungry to critically engage with the act of consumption. Centering stories and theory at the intersection of food, sex, gender, power, and sustainability, the club explores eating as an intimate, political, and ethical act.
Through novels and critical texts such as The Edible Woman, My Year of Meats, Milk Fed, The Sexual Politics of Meat, and more, we trace how desire, appetite, labor, and violence circulate within a consumerist society. Together, we ask unsettling and generative questions: What does it mean to eat, and to be eaten, under patriarchy? Whose bodies are rendered edible, whose appetites are policed, and whose labor makes pleasure possible? We look closely at kitchens, industrial farms, factories, and dinner tables as sites where gender, capitalism, colonialism, and ecological crisis collide.
Literary Appetites is a space for communal discussion around food —where pleasure and critique coexist, and where reading becomes a way to reimagine more just, sustainable, and embodied ways of living and eating. Come hungry. Leave changed.
