What genre would you assign to this book? Why? Is only one sufficient or correct? Why or why not?
From the first page, Pierce Brown dives right into the world of Mars, which has its own lingo and customs and references. Did you have a hard time acclimating to this culture and understanding what was happening, or did you pick it up right away?
Were you as surprised as Darrow to learn there was more to Mars than he knew? Why or why not?
At first, Darrow is cocky and crass. Did you like him from the start? If not, when did you start to like him?
Who was your favorite secondary character, and why?
Why does Darrow fall in love with Mustang? Is he right to trust her again after discovering her true identity? Did you find yourself comparing her to Eo?
Darrow makes strategic decisions regarding his relationship with the members of House Mars and the houses they conquer. Based on your reading of the novel, who do you think makes a better leader: someone who is loved or someone who is feared?
This book is packed with intense battles between various groups and characters. Which one stands out to you as the most compelling?
If Julian au Bellona had not been matched against Darrow at the Institute, how might Cassius au Bellona and Darrow’s friendship have turned out? Do you believe they still would have become bitter rivals, both wanting to win? Why or why not?
