When readers meet Evie in the prologue, she’s at a funeral for a man who is supposedly her husband, yet she has no recollection of him. What were you feeling as soon as you wrapped the prologue?
If you woke up with amnesia one day, what would you want your last memory to be?
Pictures of You has a lot of plot twists and turns. When Evie first confuses Drew for the Uber driver in chapter 4, did you suspect he had a history with Evie? At what point did you understand what was really happening?
Drew doesn’t tell Evie who he actually is until he is outed by Rose when they arrive in Newcastle. Do you think he should’ve told Evie immediately? Or do you agree with him about withholding the information in order to protect her and her fragile mental state?
Oliver and Evie meet in chapter 13; what was your immediate impression of Oliver? When did you begin to suspect he wasn’t the prince charming that Evie made him out to be?
Why do you think Evie was so wrapped up in Oliver immediately after meeting? What was the basis of their connection? And what led her to ultimately choose him over and over?
The photography class and subsequent exhibit are essentially what brought Drew and Evie together in the first place. Why do you think the author used cameras and photos as a means to connect these two characters?
In the present, Evie and Drew finally arrive at her parents’ home in chapter 32, but she doesn’t get the welcome home she was expecting. Instead, she realizes she doesn't have a relationship with them anymore. Were you expecting this? When you find out later on why they don’t have a relationship, do you think that her parents should’ve fought harder to try and salvage their relationship?
In chapter 41, Drew comes across a huge revelation about who his father is, causing his mother to require medical attention. What were you thinking at that moment? Did you have an idea of who his real father would be?
Why do you think Drew doesn’t tell Evie that his mother is in the hospital, choosing instead to let her believe he’s ditching her at the dance? What, if anything, do you wish Drew would have done differently here?
In chapter 67, a new character is introduced, changing the lives of Evie, Oliver, and Drew. Do you think this character brings Evie and Oliver closer together? How did you think this news would impact their lives and their relationships with one another?
Evie and Drew embark on a physical journey, while simultaneously going through each of their own mental journeys: why do you think the author used this framing for the story?
Abusive relationships can be especially difficult to get out of—did you see moments throughout the story where Evie could have chosen a different path? Why do you think it took Oliver dying for Evie to finally be free?
Is there someone in your life who has gone through a relationship similar to Evie and Oliver’s? If so, how did you deal with it?
Evie’s podcast and her research lead to a shocking discovery. What did you make of this reveal? Were you surprised?
If you had the chance to choose a different path when you were younger, would you take it? If so, what would you tell your sixteen-year-old self?
Emma Grey explores themes of memory and the loss of memory in both Pictures of You and The Last Love Note. In these novels, both protagonists grapple with the ramifications of memory loss—their own, or that of a loved one. What do you personally find most compelling about memory? Is it that memory is personal, fallible, can be a source of comfort or trauma, etc.?
