Mystery School Book 1

When Victor Chavez, the indigenous leader of an eco-labor revolution, was brutally assassinated, his daughter Estrella was only a baby. Twelve years later, the Revolution all but forgotten, Estrella is packed off to an elite boarding school by her aristocratic mother, Linda, and Linda's best friend, Kit Hamilton, the richest woman in the world. But what Estrella doesn't know is she's being educated among the very families that killed her father.

Estrella doesn’t know a lot.

She doesn’t know about the Spirit War, the Angelai, the Demonai, the Remundus, the Proletum, the will of the water, the Crystal Caves, the Alkaline Code, or the wolves. Not yet.

Through murder, romance, dreams, fierce friendships, prophecy, and blackmail, Estrella will to learn to harness her true power and lead the Angelai to fight both the Proletum and the Demonai who control them.

Book club questions for Mystery School Book 1 by L.C. Matherne

Use these discussion questions to guide your next book club meeting.

Before you begin your book club meeting, take a few minutes tobreathe together like they do in Mystery School sessions. Set a timer for three minutes, relax, close your weary eyes, and just breathe. Then, reconvene as a group and see how that exercise affected your mindset. Perhaps it was a peaceful transition from your otherwise busy day and a practice that might deepen your conversation.
When the Mystery Schoolers finally do talk in their sessions, Dr. Mather introduces what he believes is the central Mystery: the concepts of Good and Evil. How does Estrella perceive that mystery and how does she navigate it throughout the book? How do you define these concepts?
Dreams play a large part in the story. How do Estrella’s lead her forward? What parts of them turn out to be more symbolic, and which wind up being prophetic? Have your own dreams ever foretold the future or hinted at something that would be important or significant later on?
How does the presence of humor soften the drama in the book? Is humor itself perhaps one of the Mysteries that should have been discussed during Mystery School sessions? Do you ever rely on humor to make the world more livable, or to soften the drama in your life?
How does Linda’s journey relate to Estrella’s? Do mothers and daughters share an unavoidable karma, or can we make decisions that free us from the psychological ties that bind us to our families?
Where in the story does nature, particularly water, become a sort of magic? Have you ever been transformed by nature? How so?
What about the mind/body/magic connection in the book? How do the characters use sports, words, and their bodies to pull off supernatural feats? What do you think about words influencing the crystal formations in water?
