Opening Discussion

What first pulled you into I Will Find You – the premise, the characters, the mystery, or the promise of a Harlan Coben twist?

Rachel's visit gives David his first real reason to hope. When she shows him a photo that may be of Matthew, what do you think motivates her to bring it to him? Would the photo have been enough proof for you, and why does David believe that it could be real?

The novel switches point of view from a close omniscient narrator to David Burroughs’s first-person voice. How did that affect your perception of David? Did it make you trust him more or less? Did the series make you see him differently?

Secrets, Loyalty & Trust

Multiple characters keep secrets throughout the story. Which secrets felt understandable, and which felt unforgivable? Which secret, if any, would you have been willing to keep?

Family loyalty takes many forms in this story. Why do you think David’s family has doubts about his innocence? Can doubt be separated from loyalty? How does David’s family’s loyalty compare with the Payne family’s protection of Hayden, or the Fischer crime family’s loyalty?

Characters & Adaptation Choices

Rachel plays a much more active role in the Netflix series as a former reporter whose skills help drive the investigation. Did this make her a more compelling character? How did her expanded role change the story or your perception of her relationship with David?

Hayden Payne is more directly connected to Rachel in the series, bringing the Payne family closer to the emotional center of the story. How does that change the way you view Hayden, Rachel, and the Payne family's influence? Did this change make the mystery feel more intimate, more suspicious, or more emotionally complex?

In the series, Lenny Burroughs, Philip Mackenzie, and Adam Mackenzie become entangled in David's fate through acts of loyalty, protection, and deception both before and after Matthew's murder. How do their motivations complicate the story? At what point does protecting someone cross the line into enabling them?

Which secondary character would you most want to know more about, and why? Consider Max Williams, Sarah Greer, Adam Mackenzie, Aunt Cheryl, Eddie Grilton, Ted "Curly" Weston, Hayden Payne, or another supporting character.
