Use these discussion questions to guide your next book club meeting.
Have you ever worked in an office environment anything like the Western regional office of Supershops? What details of cubicle life did you find the funniest and/or most cringeworthy?
If you had been in Jolene's shoes, would you have read your coworkers emails? Used the email access to try to get ahead at work? Sabotaged Caitlin? Where would you draw the line and why?
Jolene has suffered from unresolved grief and trauma. And she at times makes very questionable decisions. Were you rooting for her or did you find her actions offputting?
Jolene ultimately realizes that everyone she works with has things they're going through personally and/or professionally. Which of her coworkers did you most enjoy getting to know better?
Are you a proponent of being friends with your coworkers? Why or why not?
Let's talk more about Jolene's growth and development. What causes her to try to change how she lives? What allows her to ultimately make those changes?
Why do both Jolene and Armin feel so much pressure to live up to their parents' expectations? Could you relate? Would you ever fake a promotion or a relationship to try to make your parents happy?
Did the book's depiction of the immigrant experience - particularly for second generation immigrants like Jolene - ring true to you?
Food porn aside: Which Persian treat described in this book would you most want to try? Which donut flavor sounded most appealing? Do you agree with Jolene and Cliff that filled donut holes are an abomination?
What did you think of the romance between Jolene and Cliff? What drew them to each other? How did they support or challenge each other? Were you rooting for them?
Caitlin and Jolene both end up doing pretty bad things to each other. Would you be able to forgive under those circumstances?
Let's talk about the ending! How did you feel about the pacing of the ending compared to the rest of the book? Were you glad to see pretty much everyone get a happy ending?
