American Fantasy

Emma Straub has spoken about her fascination with the “machine” behind boy bands – young people separated from their families, growing up under intense management and public adoration while still figuring out who they are. How does American Fantasy explore the long-term effects of that kind of manufactured fame? What do you think it would be like to come of age inside that system, and then have to build a life once the spotlight fades?

Each chapter of the novel is set on a different deck of the cruise ship. Why do you think Emma Straub chose to structure the story this way? How does moving through the different decks shape your understanding of the characters, the setting, or the emotional journey of the book?

The idea of a middle-aged boy band performing on a cruise ship can feel a little cringey at first glance. Why do you think that setting creates that reaction? Does American Fantasy challenge that instinct in any way, and what might it suggest about aging, nostalgia, and how we judge people who try to hold on to, or revisit, their past selves?

Why do you think we’re often drawn to revisiting our youth (whether through memories, music, places, or relationships from that time?) Do you think it’s about nostalgia, unfinished business, understanding who we used to be, or something else entirely?

How does the book explore the experience of reaching middle age and needing to redefine yourself? What questions arise for the characters about identity and purpose – Who am I now? Am I still relevant? What do I actually want my life to look like?
