Natalie Sue’s You’ll Love It Here was so warm-hearted. Like a big soft cashmere blanket wrapped around me, I snuggled into the story and thoroughly enjoyed it so much that I did not want the story to end.
Mona is stuck—in a tiny, falling-apart Calgary apartment she never meant to stay in, in a marketing job that is eating her alive, and in a life that has somehow become all waiting and no living. One disastrous day blows it all up. Suddenly she’s on leave from work, reluctantly acting as building super, walking the landlady’s dog, and getting pulled into the lives of the nosy, loud, messy neighbors she has spent years trying to ignore.
Sue makes every one of them feel real. I could see and feel every character—the shouting couple, the shut-in, the diner cook across the alley, the landlady, even the dog. They start as types and become people you care about. That is Sue’s gift. Her first book made me laugh. This one made me cry. It still has her sharp, funny voice, but the heart is bigger and closer to the surface.
Underneath the comedy is a quiet, aching reminder that we don’t have as long as we think with one another. The people in the hallway, the ones we roll our eyes at, the ones we assume will always be there—none of it is guaranteed.
The book is about burnout, grief, found family, and the slow realization that the place you’re desperate to leave might be the one that finally shows you who you really are, if you pay attention.
I closed the book wishing I could stay in the Valley View Apartment building a little longer or stroll over to Chef Sami’s diner for one more exquisite dish made with such love and devotion to the customers he served. The ending was hopeful, inspiring, uplifting, and redeeming. It was perfect. Natalie Sue has sealed the deal. She is going on my Authors to Always Read list for sure.
