How Bad Things Can Get by Darcy Coates (8/26/25)
Published by Poisoned Pen Press
"How Bad Things Can Get" by Darcy Coates is a suspenseful, mystery, horror book that will leave you utterly astonished. It did take me a couple of chapter or so to become fully engaged. When the plot began to develop, I was hooked and had to find out what happened next and couldn’t put it down.
The story starts with an epic party, hosted by an online influencer on his private Prosperity Island, where contestants indulge in drinks, entertainment, and elaborate games. However, the island has a sinister history tied to an infamous cult. Ruth arrives on the island determined to remain quiet, as she is haunted by a dark secret from her past. Yet, when the island's history is unveiled along with Ruth's troubling connection to it, the narrative takes a profoundly disturbing turn.
If you enjoy dark, atmospheric novels with elements of gore, and horror, this book is the perfect choice. I read Dead of Winter a few years ago, and loved it. I knew I had to find more of this authors’ books, and they did not disappoint.
