This was my first book by CJ Box and it was a great introduction to his writing. I really enjoyed the pacing and how well he balanced world-building with action.
The dialogue felt thoughtful and natural, which made the characters feel real. Reading this book felt like watching a movie unfold the descriptions created vivid images of the settings and scenes without slowing down the story.
I also enjoyed the ending and the irony of how it connected back to the title.
It has a very slow start, but is packed with action and interesting character dynamics. While some things might make more sense if you read prior books from this series, it is not necessary in order to understand the story and have a good time reading it! My only real complaint is that this is not a very diverse book which can make certain character design choices seem a bit questionable.
