Arriving in Crystal Cove to arrange the sale of her aunt's houseboat, Tabitha Chase stumbles upon the body of a local witch. Although she had been open to the world of magic as a child, she had allowed her father's prejudices against witchcraft to close her off to her mystical side. She becomes involved in the investigation of the witch's killer and finds that she may have a place to call home.
Tabby is an engaging heroine. Due to her father's political aspirations, she has been controlled and coerced into denying who she is. As she spends more time in Crystal Cove, experiencing some unusual phenomena, she becomes a more accepting person. Her involvement in the investigation feels natural and she works in conjunction with the police. She doesn't unnecessarily put herself in danger as some amateur sleuths do.
Ms. Jaden has written an enjoyable mystery set in a charming small town. Although this is the first book in the series, her characters seem believable and have dimension. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series and getting to know Tabby and her friends better.
