Where the Red Fern Grows

One of the most beloved children’s classics of all time, this unforgettable coming-of-age adventure is a story of love, loyalty, and the bond between a boy and his two dogs.
Billy has dreamed for years of owning not one, but two dogs. So when he finally saves enough money to bring home two Redbone Coonhounds—Old Dan and Little Ann—he can hardly believe his luck. Even during hard times, the three become inseparable as they roam the hills of the Ozarks together.
Before long, Billy and his beloved hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Word of their adventures spreads far and wide, and the combination of Old Dan’s strength, Little Ann’s intelligence, and Billy’s determination seems unstoppable. But when heartbreak enters their lives, Billy discovers the enduring power of love and resilience, and learns that even loss can leave behind something beautiful.

Read this the first time in third grade, and it taught me that even great stories can be sad. First time I cried over reading a book. I have never owned a dog, but this book led to me reading Big Red and the rest of those series of dog-centered books. The characters are real, living in a very difficult situation that helped me appreciate my own life. At the same time, it was my first taste of reality that I see now in reality television about specific types of jobs. A great read that pulls at the heart strings and gives a glimpse of a very different life and time. Highly recommended!
I never read this as a young adult and I finally got around to reading it (listened to it on audio book) Do not read if you dont like stories when the dog dies at the end.
This book taught me what it was to want for something work for it and then lose it. It was also the very first book to make me cry. Literally sobbing heaving I cannot catch my breath slinging snot across the pages type of crying.
Amazing so sad don't read if you cry to much
