Charlotte Campbell and Nora Crowell are two women living in Halifax, Nova Scotia during the WWI era. Charlotte's husband was killed overseas and she and her daughter are living with with her in-laws. Nora is a young nurse living with her sister and her two nieces, Clara and Evelyn. Both women are affected by the tremendous explosion that occurred at Halifax Harbor in 1917. Two ships collided, but one was filled with explosives, caught fire, and exploded, killing thousands and maiming many more.

Nora meets Neil, a young doctor, while working at the hospital. He is struck by her dedication, hard work and friendliness. Nora is pregnant with the child of her beau, Alley, who is now overseas. She is hoping he will marry her when he returns, but he is not answering her letters to him. Charlotte is out walking on the day of the explosion and suffers severe injuries to her leg. When she wakes up from the hospital, she discovers her daughter, Aileen is missing.

Nora goes looking for her family who had been near the pier at the time of the explosion. Jane and her daughter, Clara, and her parents are missing.

I enjoyed this historical fiction story. There were parts that were engrossing and I couldn't stop reading. However, a few of the plotlines were a bit predictable. When Aileen finds a child matching Aileen's description, she is convinced that this is her daughter, but notices some differences. It is obvious that she has Clara, not Aileen. Dr. Neil McLeod is handsome and caring and walks Nora home from the hospital. She invites him to stay at her sister's house which is also used as a boarding house. All the tenants, the doctor and the neighbor, Mrs.Thompson, bond together to form a "family." It is inevitable that romance would spark between Nora and Neil.
