What's Mine and Yours

As love is built and lost, and the past never too far behind, What's Mine and Yours is an expansive, vibrant tapestry that moves between the years, from the foothills of North Carolina, to Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Paris. It explores the unique organism that is every family: what breaks them apart and how they come back together.

I don't think I really understand the purpose of this story. I get the part about the impacts of racism, and the way the parents treated the incoming students of color was horrific, but I guess I didn't get the plot, nor did I see much character growth. I know the book is well regarded, so I'm sure it's just me, but I generally prefer a greater sense of a "story arc" with some kind of resolution at the end, and I didn't pick up on that with this one.

This one makes you look in the mirror. And cry. I cried. I cried out of anger and pain for how hard it is for some people just to get by in life and at the end of the day, it's about YOUR choices. You have the same 24 hours as everyone else, your decisions impact those 24 hours and the next.

This is the charming story of two young cousins who live in the same household for a year. The girls become best friends as Mina's cousin, enthralled by all the people with whom she has come to live, senses there is a secret. Of course she wonders what the secret is and eventually endeavors to find out what it is. It is a lovely story: no murder or mayhem. Rather it is about a normal although wealthy Japanese family in the early 1970s of five adults two children and a pigmy hippo who make their way through life. It is a charming and relaxing read: worth the little time it takes.
