A collection of short and old comic book stories pertaining to Holocaust. They have a bunch of intro text that's a tad wordy and unfocused.
Master Race 6/10
The first story is presented as a masterpiece that is one of the best comic book stories ever written ... ehh, not so much. It's decent tension and horror, but weak story. About a passenger in a train. He's a concentration camp guard and his nerves are breaking.
Desert Fox 8/10
Second story shows the true potential. We see Rommel from a new light. Not as a heroic general. But a heroic general working for an evil empire. The story is magnificently structured and I wish I could read more of this.
The Tattoed Heart 5/10
Quite lame. Another story with a Nazi concentration camp guard who goes insane from being haunted by his past. It's just nonsense anyhow Nazi guards were often psychopaths with no empathy for anyone. They wouldn't feel sad about their past.
Escape from Maidenek 5/10
Ehh ... there is a true story here. Yet it's depicted factually wrong here.
Experiment in Fear! 7/10
Quite clever ending and good horror. Again KZ, but more grounded.
Captain Marvel: The Mad Master of the Murder Maze! 2/10
What is this? It's not even about Holocaust. It's a weird mess.
Batman: Night of the Reaper! 6/10
Batman! Heck yeah. This story is smart in itself. It's just way too short. The storyline doesn't work in a short format. But I recognize the fake Batman costume guy getting killed from the new Batman movie. A lot here is smart.
The Unknown Soldier: Totentanz 6/10
Escape from Holocaust camp again. A bit creative, but little tension with so few pages. All plans just work right away.
Thou Shalt Not Kill 5/10
Golem! Amazing stuff in theory as he kills Nazis who are burning Jews alive. Not enough brutality and blood. Shame.
The Duty of Man 7/10
Helping Jews escape Norway to Britain. Fine enough. Hard to rate it by itself as it's a soldier who doesn't want to kill so there is something bigger here as this character has way more stories.
The Losers: Mark Our Graves! 5/10
Jews fighting WW2. I love the idea, but there is no story. We jump from place to place.
Walls of Blood 8/10
This is really cool. We follow Nazi guards in the Warsaw ghetto as Jews pick up arms. It's real events and the guards pretty much act as you expect. Calling Jews weak for dying and constantly killing them for small offenses then telling themselves they are just following orders.
Holocaust
There is nothing here.
The Fourth Death! 7/10
Drawings are again quite mediocre. I do like the story of the concentration camp escapees.
Captain American: From The Ashes 5/10
Cap saves a KZ camp. Ehhh, bad pacing. All over the place.
Captain America: The Calypso Connection! 4/10
Again a fine idea with a Nazi hunter, but it's a giant mess. There are not enough pages to tell this story, yet again.
The Uncanny X-Men: Gold Rush! 5/10
Xavier and Magneto defeat Nazis. But they barely even have to try so it feels pointless.
The Last Outrage 9/10
Only really good story. About Dina Gottliebova, a Jew in Auschwitz forced to paint painting of Gypsies for Dr. Mengele to prove his theory that they look like subhuman. The Auschwitz museum has her paintings and refuse to give them to her as they claim the painting belong to Mengele. Or maybe to the museum as they are too important to give away to the painter. She didn't get them despite 450 comic book artists writing a letter to the museum. This one is modern, from 2008, and it shows as the drawings are great, storytelling on point, research proper. Everything else here is quite childish and this is a higher level.
Book review
Ehh, it's not good. Most of this old superhero stuff is painfully badly drawn and written. With pacing so fast you don't understand anything. I didn't enjoy it overall despite a few stories being good and I did learn a bit. The description text itself reveals that the stories got much of the history wrong. Which is understandable when it's all written in weeks. Yet it really does feel shallow. Frankly I figured old comics would be higher quality this is a big letdown.
