We Can Never Leave This Place

"When you're given a gift, something else gets taken away."

A precocious young girl with an unusual imagination is sent on an odyssey into the depths of depravity. After her father dies violently, young Mara is surprised to find her mother welcoming a new guest into their home, claiming that he will protect them from the world of devastation and destruction outside their door.

A grotesque and thrilling dark fantasy, We Can Never Leave This Place is a harrowing portrait of inherited grief and familial trauma.

"We Can Never Leave This Place is the apocalyptic 21st century Grimm's fairy tale you need in your life. Eric LaRocca plucks images directly from the muck and mire of our id and fashions them into something grotesquely beautiful." Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World and The Pallbearers Club

"We Can Never Leave This Place is a bleak and tender, monstrous and visceral fable of family and loss, and the courage it takes to confront them both." Kathe Koja, author of The Cipher

I would first like to thank Eric LaRocca for providing me with an ARC of this novella via ebook in exchange for an honest review. This novella will be released on June 24th, 2022. I had really high expectations for this novella due to the fact that I rated the two LaRocca works that I've read previously 5 stars respectively; however, I feel that my expectations may have brought down my rating of this novella. This novella just seemed to drag on for me in the first 3/4s of the work; it wasn't bad... but it wasn't as good as I anticipated it being. It took me twenty days to read this novella that is less than 100 pages long; the other two LaRocca works that I've read were super quick reads for me, so I think the rate at which I read this shows just how slow the first 3/4s were for me. I really enjoyed the commentary on grief and generational trauma, and I think the reveal at the end was... oof, so wild! I truly loved the last quarter of the story, and I wish the entire novella had the same momentum. I'm still INCREDIBLY excited to read more from LaRocca, and I'm still a HUGE fan of his work. I think that there are elements of this novella that could work for others; the story just wasn't 100% my cup of tea.
