Not as unsettling or weird as I had hoped but still an enjoyable read. I thought the plot was quite predictable and some elements felt a bit silly (the christian busybodies, the unnecessary fatphobia around the 'villainous' teenager girls), It was strongest in its depiction of unspeakable grief (Nif's poor mother Linda, grasping for any sense of peace) and the more feral elements of 1970s childhoods.
On a different note, not sure if it was just my copy or even if it was intentional, but the line spacing changed a lot and was quite distracting.
