This was the most widely read and influential book of the 19th century, the book that is said to have caused the Civil War, and, ultimately led to the emancipation of slaves in our country. We all hear the term "Uncle Tom" used in our current society to describe a certain type of man. And, not only that, but other characters in this book were familiar to me before I read this book: Little Eva, Simon Legree and Topsy. For my own cultural education, I felt the need to read this book.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is filled with stereotypes on all sides and often feels like a religious tract on the evils of slavery. And, slavery of any kind is and will always be evil. I'm glad this book illustrated such heinous examples of mistreatment to influence change our culture.
One thought has occurred to me though. Do all the people who use the term "Uncle Tom" in a derogatory manner know what a noble character Uncle Tom is?
