6/10 stars
Meandering, well-crafted characters, prove ultimately uninteresting when plotted in a predictable outcome. This is the first of this author’s books I’ve read and it feels very much like he had much higher aspirations prior to penning this book at 72 years old. I despised the constant description of what his women are wearing where he always makes a comment about their breasts and how the male characters would react to it. Also, apparently, the novel is set in the 1960’s, but there’s next to nothing to suggest that it’s not set in 2024. Boyd seems to think all you have to do is not mention modern technology and that proves an earlier time period. Sheesh. I give 6/10 for obvious talent - 4 for everything above.
