Very nice action book with a lot of research into the arts and times. Seamlessly fits into the time of Charles' (when he was only the Prince of Wales) trip to Spain to woo the daughter of Philip IV. I really liked being opened to the Spain of the time right before the Restoration to feel the Catholic hatred of the heretics as well as the reinforcement of damage caused by 2 things: the need for gold from the America's to pay for the massive debts incurred by the 30 Years' War, and the 30 Years' War itself. I am always going to be biased toward the soldiers coming home, and to see Spanish soldiers coming home from Flanders and suffering at the hands of a broke nation is always going to produce a new class of thug that is unemployable, and who's prospects are unenviable. This has been repeated throughout many of the wars, and during the 1600's wars were simply too expensive for the monarchs who were attempting to maintain them. I especially liked the emphasis on dramatists and poets of the era, and I have a new list of authors to seek out works from now.
Other than that, the plot follows two characters simultaneously even though, we are certain that the only one who can be telling the entire story is the page and not the Captain.
It was a good fast read, and followed perfect after a little study of the 30 Years' War.
