I mean, it was a good time... but it was also highly unbelievable.
I first read Caleb Crowe’s The Girl in the Painting and I was beyond excited to read his second book. Megan and Nick have purchased and moved into their dream house, albeit rather hastily. However, their dream house also comes with neighbors Ron and Jackie, who are atypiclal and anything but neighborly. The sense of dread and anxiety begins to fill the pages of this book from the first introduction to these neighbors and you know something bad is going to happen. Also, Megan discovers that Nick is not honest about anything basically, and she is shocked to discover this. The neighbors continue on their merry way, living life as they very well please, and it is as shocking as you can imagine. I can’t say more without giving anything away.
Mr. Crowe does an excellent job at ratcheting up the tension in the marriage between Megan and Nick and the relationship between the neighbors. There is a surprise when Megan falls pregnant, but really, is there? They have been together for a long time. Megan’s survival instincts kick in majorly when she discovers she is pregnant and I really enjoyed the book from that point on. For those that say Megan wouldn’t do this or that, I say how do you know? Have you ever been in that situation? I think Mr. Crowe shows how desperate a person can become and how they can do anything to protect what they love. And that’s all I have to say about that. A 5-star read!
