The multigenerational story of struggle and triumph is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The character development is unique for sure. Hattie's plight is a tough one to read about but is so necessary since I know so many African American women can relate. Mathis also does a great job of reminding us of American history while spinning a different kind of love story. I would read this again.
This is a really good read. A lot going on. Keeps you interested in the children.
