The Trumpet of the Swan 50th Anniversary

The delightful classic by E. B. White, author of Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, about overcoming obstacles and the joy of music.

Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can't trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can't even make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena's affection--he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?

"We, and our children, are lucky to have this book." --John Updike

This book is fantastic. First of all, unlike Charlotte's Web, the plot makes sense. It has a disabled swan overcome all and achieve stardom. There's family, friendship, and even romance! There's a lot of discussion about education, truth, honor, and music. There's a career, business, and math angle in the book. This book would absolutely be 5 stars except for the tiny detail that Louie inexplicably sells his swan babies at the end. What?

This book was read aloud to me back in elementary school, but I could not remember anything about the story. My first thoughts leaned toward how ridiculous this book is. Pure silliness. When I shut my logical adult brain down, I started to enjoy the bigger than life characters. Charlotte’s Web will always be my favorite E.B. White, but I find Louis very endearing.
