I was not as enthralled with this book or this trilogy as it seems some other readers have been. The created world is certainly very detailed, creative, and complete, especially the language and the names, but I found the characters and the story kind of boring. Sometimes the story seemed mildly interesting, and there are short bits where the action gets exciting around ghouls or ghosts. But I found it hard to care about the main character, who does display more emotion in this book than the others, but overall, he's rather dry. And I didn't care much who the murderers were. Why? I'm not sure ... it all seemed so remote and academic to me. I want to read The Goblin Emperor, as I wonder if perhaps the emotional attachment to that book resonates through the series and makes it more enjoyable.

Deeply wholesome book. Love the good characters and solid friendships. This one is more adventure novel than the prior books, but still full of slice of life details. This protagonist is excellent and I love his point of view.
