I recently had the pleasure of meeting Elba and her daughter, which felt perfectly timed as I had just finished reading her book. I picked it up because she’s Puerto Rican, and I always love supporting mi gente. The story resonated with me deeply, reminding me of my own family and upbringing in NYC.

I’m thrilled I was able to get a signed copy for my mom as well. Elba's writing gave me serious ‘When I Was Puerto Rican’ by Esmeralda Santiago vibes—a book that both my mom and I cherished, and also have signed by Esmeralda herself. I first read it in high school and had the honor of meeting Esmeralda in college, and I truly believe Elba is the next Esmeralda Santiago.

There aren't many authors who capture our stories this way, and I'm so grateful Elba has written such a relatable and powerful book. As someone who grew up as “de allá fuera,” this story hit home. I look forward to seeing her writing journey flourish, and I want to say it now—putting it out into the universe—that I will see this book in classrooms as required reading one day.

Wishing you a wonderful retirement, Elba—you’ve more than earned it!

Very good book that follows a set of Puerto Rican siblings as they age. Complex relationships with family are discussed, dynamics within the family, social situations most kids struggle with, and more. The book also discusses how each generation may adapt (or not) to American cultures.
