The Thing Around Your Neck is that anomaly because rarely do I read a short-story collection and find every piece as good as the one before. Of course, some stories resonated with me more personally and became my favorites, but in terms of writing, plot, characters, themes, and emotional depth, each one deserves its own place. Each story explores the themes of displacement, personal change, race, and feminism. And each story also feels complete, with well-developed characters, their growth and change, and a plot that either develops through rising or falling action, never failing to fully engage my attention.
This book was truly amazing. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie did a outstanding job with all 12 of these different short stories. My favorite would be the last two stories personally, but they have a great meaning and are interesting to read. I do really love that every story is from a woman point of view and their struggles either in Lagos, America and other locations.
