This story was a breath of fresh air. Detective stories with a female heroine may not seem like a novel idea, but a heroine that is an 11 year old girl with a passion for chemistry and a penchant for poison, two prissy older sisters, a fairly uninvolved father, and a deceased mother - all set in the English countryside in the early 1950's? It's brilliant! She's precocious and cheeky and completely lovable. This is a delightful read for all ages. I'm hooked. Maybe I'll even join the Flavia de Luce Fan Club!

I confess...I got this book because I liked the fact that the author had my last name. HA! But I found myself enchanted with Flavia's world and captivated with the delightful characters within.

UPDATE: First read in 2009,and I'm re-reading this one since it has been 7 years since I read this first book in the series. I now have several books in the series that I want to tackle next, and I thought it best to go back and start at the beginning. A very good place to start...

I still find Flavia's voice unique and fresh. It's a fun text filled with quirky characters. Highly enjoyable! Can't wait to find out what she gets mixed up with next.
