Another MKR delight. If you like Wendell Berry's township series, you'll probably enjoy this, too. Family relationships within a farming community. The protagonist is a hard working second child - always chosen last or second best. Even so, he remains devoted to his family and pours himself into caring for a farm that he doesn't own. His closest friendships come from unlikely characters - a Native American man, the "queen" of a gypsy caravan, an alcoholic field hand. Over the course of a life, we see what steady choices and an even temperament bring this gentle man in the end...
