The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World

ECPA BESTSELLER • A compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favor of a slower, simpler way of life—from the New York Times bestselling author of Practicing the Way
“Prophetic, practical, and profoundly life giving . . . provides a way forward that creates hope, hunger, and a vision of a beautiful life. I consider this required reading.”—Jon Tyson, lead pastor of the Church of the City New York and author of Beautiful Resistance
“Who am I becoming?”
That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:
“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”
It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.
Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

I really loved John Comer's book. His premise, that hurry is fundamentally incompatible with the joy, peace, and reality at the heart of Jesus’ kingdom, is valid and an issue to be explored. His point, that living at a frantic pace leads to spiritual oblivion, is a shocking discovery and one we should all consider as a warning to be heeded, as we all would like to have a deeper and more sincere relationship with God.
Constant distractions have lead, for many, to lives empty of spiritual meaning; we need to take the time to be still and listen.
Drawing on voices like T.S. Eliot and Mary Oliver, Comer highlights how slowing down—through practices like solitude, simplicity, and attentive living—not only bring us closer to Jesus, and his lifestyle but also helps us become more like him and act as he would. Ultimately, Comer’s message is a call to resist the culture of speed, embrace a quiet life, and find meaning by being fully present in each moment. A great and needed book for our time. Highly recommended. 5 Stars, Cy Young
This book offers practical advice and realistic actions to combat the busyness of modern life. John Mark Comer’s reflections on slowing down and living intentionally are helpful and timely. However, readers should note the strong Christian perspective, which may not suit everyone. Still, it’s a thoughtful guide for those seeking balance.
Was a great read with amazing tips for how to simplify life into what you value most if you don’t like Christian stuff this isn’t for you
This book was such a good read. It was fun to read and easy to understand. It also included some practices to eliminate hurry. One of my favorite nonfiction Christian books.
Woof, I listened to this one because I love his voice, but I will have to read it in a hard copy, because I have some highlighting to do. Very convicting in the best way.
