I just finished this book a couple of hours ago, and just wow! I was not expecting any of it. I just knew I really wanted to read it because Mara Brock Akil is the author, and what a debut! I will say that the book started off slow for me, and I got an idea of some of the trauma that would be explored, so it took me several attempts to get fully immersed in the book. But once I got to about chapter 5, I flew through it. The ending felt disconnected and rushed, and I wanted more exploration of certain relationships. A great book, you should definitely read it, but do keep in mind that it comes with very heavy topics, and if you’re currently struggling with something, maybe let that pass before you pick it up. Beautifully written, but desperately needed content warnings!
I was so excited to dive into The Revelation of Dion Daphne. Mara Brock Akil has such a brilliant, beautiful, and eloquent way of storytelling, and her talent absolutely shines through in the prose. The audiobook narration by the incredibly talented actress DeWanda Wise was also phenomenal—I typically struggle with audiobooks, but her performance was so smooth and emotive that it kept me completely engaged.
That being said, readers should proceed with caution. The book is incredibly heavy and features extremely descriptive depictions of childhood sexual abuse and trauma. I was really surprised that there were no trigger warnings in the publisher's description or mentioned across most reviews. While the writing itself is undeniably artistic and powerful, the heavy subject matter caught me off guard.
If you choose to read or listen, just be aware of the heavy themes ahead. It's a beautifully crafted story, but it demands emotional readiness.
This book took me on a journey, I felt like I was watching one of Mara’s shows. The complexity in emotions Dionne feels towards the people in her life are real which shows the human in her. I love the representation of how her trauma shows up, it hits on a lot of IFS therapy. The way she compartmentalize’s emotions and trauma to highlight the human begin on the other side is a representation of the compassion humans can hold. This book made me think about how the things we call freedom and revelation come with consequences we unfortunately ignore until we are forced not to.

What got me: how honestly this book portrays trauma living in the body the overthinking, the outbursts, the whiplash of coming back to yourself a page later. It's uncomfortable in the way real healing is uncomfortable. Akil's prose and attention to detail are exactly what you'd expect from her but the ending leans cliffhanger, leaving several threads (the stepfather's fate, a major family reveal) unresolved.
Favorite line: "Confronting your past isn't a disruption of your life. It is healing that begins with you and extends to those around you who also need healing."
