The Red Tent

Description

In this modern classic interpretation of the biblical story of Dinah, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of The Red Tent, a New York Times bestseller and the basis of the A&E/Lifetime mini-series.

Twentieth Anniversary Edition

In the Bible, Dinah's life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.

The Red Tent begins with the story of the mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.

Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling and the valuable achievement of presenting a new view of biblical women's lives.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant was recommended to me by a friend. However, when I read the description and saw that it was based on the biblical character Dinah, I almost disregarded it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me insights to women's lives during Biblical times. I also suggest that one reads the Biblical pages as at helps understand the times as well. I like that women had the sense of continuity in their families and community. We have lost that in the here and now.

2nd time reading this as part of my February "Love Month" in which I am re-reading a large chunk of the books I've marked as favorites over the years to see if they are still truly favorites or if they were only a favorite because they struck at the right time/place in my life.

It is necessary for me to note the then of my first time reading this versus the now of my second time reading this. I promise this is somewhat relevant to how I review thi...read more

I enjoyed this read. It's fiction, but it's believable fiction. As a woman I enjoyed the idea that my fore mothers honored themselves during moon phase. Can you believe how women were treated in ancient times? Ha! We may not be outwardly treated this way, because most women will not stand for it - for long, but I believe most men have little appreciation for women. They adapt and learn how to behave to get what they need, but I do not believe it'...read more
