The Raven Boys

An all-new series from the masterful, #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater!

Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn't believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.

This book was incredible. It was recommended by a friend and it did not disappointed. It amazes me the amount of people that read the last page. It would have given so much away and would have had me wondering the entire book. The last sentence I actually said, "I'm sorry, what?!" I'm buying the second book, NOW.

I think this was incorrectly marketed as a forbidden, fated fantasy romance YA novel. In fact, I would say about 10% of the book is focussed on this, and the other 90% is 'quirky,' 'unique' characters, found family, ley lines hiding sleeping kings, psychics, tarot cards and magical forests. This all sounds fine, and actually preferable to the fated romance imo, but I could NOT connect with the characters and therefore could not connect with the story. Don't get me wrong, this is well written, and flows well, but the characters are just...there. Let me explain.

There is an immediate sense of being an outsider to the circle of the 4 raven boys - we are thrust into the middle of their back and forth family-like bickering with no sense of who the hell is who. I was lost and struggled to find my way around them, and was only offered vague character traits like 'rebellious,' 'stubborn' and mostly 'rich'. Then there's our MC, Blue, who tries almost TOO hard to be unique and special, but comes off more as arrogant, self-centred, judgemental and selfish.

I really couldn't tell you what happened in the first 60% of this book besides probably trying to set the scene and flesh out the characters. I suppose the boys drove around as a single celled unit, and at some point blue stuck herself onto them. It DOES get a little more interested towards the end of the book, but the final chapter just threw a spanner back in the works - I will forgive this though, as I expect this will be ironed out further into the series.

Suffice it to say, I struggled through this, and will likely not be picking up the rest of the series.

Blue is a teen with a complicated world - multiple jobs, school, a psychic for a mother and a lot of curiosity. She meets some teen boys from the nearby prep school [ Raven Boys ] and things begin to spanwildly out of control. The leader of the boys, Gansy, is searching to open a ley line and has engaged his friends in the mission. Blue joins in and then the plot thickens. I was a little confused at the beginning about who was who and what their slowly revealed backstories meant, but once that was accomplished, things moved quickly. This had a satisfying ending, but left lots of room for part 2.

I found this storyline unique--not your typical teen paranormal love story--and I loved it.
