The Poison Daughter

By Sheila Masterson

To err is human. To avenge is Divine.

Every person Harlow Carrenwell kisses dies immediately, and that's the way she likes it. The poison-lipped youngest daughter of Lunameade's magical founding family has used her power to annihilate their opposition.

Her first husband is in the ground. Her new betrothed is next.

But the merry widow has a secret. When she's not acting as an assassin at her parents' whims, she moonlights as a vigilante for abused women in their walled-off city.

Meet a man. Lure him in. Kill him with a kiss. Until one night Harlow kisses a mark and he doesn't die.

Worse, her invincible partner in passion is her new betrothed, Henry Havenwood, and now he knows about her double life. Instead of selling her out and bringing the rival families to blows, he does something much more sinister-whisks her away to wed in his wild mountain fort.

Harlow doesn't trust Henry, but the only way to protect her family and the city of Lunameade is to figure out what his family is planning.

Cursed with a husband she can't kill and trapped in a fort miles of vampire-infested woods from home, Harlow's survival requires her to do the impossible: Make the man who knows she's a killer fall in love with her anyway.

The Poison Daughter is a standalone dark fantasy romance that combines the vigilante justice for abusive men of Promising Young Woman with a romantasy arranged marriage and a dash of vampires.

The Poison Daughter was such a fun surprise. Harlow has a poisonous kiss and has spent most of her life being used as an assassin by her awful parents. She also secretly spends her nights as the Poison Vixen killing abusive men around Lunameade. I loved the vigilante angle because it Harlow took something her family used to control her and made it her own. Henry enters the picture when Harlow kisses him and he does not die. Of course, the one man immune to her poison also happens to be her new arranged fiancé. I really liked that Harlow did not immediately become obsessed with him. Their relationship was hot, but her entire personality did not suddenly revolve around a man. Watching her grow into herself, choose what she wanted, and eventually choose herself was refreshing. The magic was fantastic. Harlow's poison, the different abilities running through the families, and the darker blood magic made the world feel really unique. I liked that the vampires were actually scary. These were not sexy vampires waiting around to become someone's book boyfriend. They were monsters. Horror story vampire are so back in style! Masterson kept me guessing. I did not predict most of the twists. Several reveals completely changed what I thought was happening. Harlow's family drama became more horrifying as the story went on. This made watching her finally get her revenge extremely satisfying. Girl deserved it. The spice was also excellent. Henry knows what he is doing. The scenes were detailed, risky, and hot. Exactly what I want from a darker romantasy. So why four stars instead of five? Sheila Masterson would not wrap it up. I found myself constantly thinking, "Ma'am. We are done. Please move along." I kept reaching points where I thought the book was ending, only for it to keep going. Some scenes were so long that I started mentally rewriting them to see how much shorter they could have been. I zoned out several times because the same point had already been made and we were somehow still talking about it. A tighter edit would have made a huge difference. I still loved so much about The Poison Daughter. Harlow was a fantastic heroine, the revenge was satisfying, the magic felt fresh, the twists surprised me, and the romance brought plenty of spice without taking over Harlow's story. I will definitely be reading more from Sheila Masterson.

The Poison Daughter was my first dark fantasy romance, and I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect going into it. To my surprise, I found myself completely drawn into the story. Once I started reading, I was locked in and wanted to see what would happen next. The book was well written, and the storyline was intriguing enough to keep my attention throughout. I was impressed by how easily the story pulled me into the fantasy world while also blending in the darker and romantic elements of the book. As someone who doesn’t typically read fantasy, I appreciated how engaging the story was and how it kept me curious. This book gave me hope and encouragement to step outside of my usual reading preferences and explore more books in the fantasy category. I didn’t expect my first dark fantasy romance to leave such an impression on me, but The Poison Daughter definitely opened the door to a genre I’m now interested in exploring further.
